Chairman’s Message

Dear Delegates,

On behalf of IENE, I wish to welcome you to the annual conference of our Institute, the “Energy and Development 2024”, which is taking place for the 28th consecutive year, whereas IENE, the conference organiser, celebrates itself 21 years of uninterrupted activity, promoting research and dialogue in every aspect of the energy agenda in Greece and SE Europe.

As the founder and main organizer of this major annual event I wish to reflect upon the significant impact that the conference has had over the years in shaping public debate and dialogue on key energy and environment issues in Greece and the region. Hence, I am very proud that I shall be chairing once again this trend setting colloquium and I look forward meeting all speakers and moderators in what promises to be a very busy two day event. I wish them luck with their presentations and panel moderation.

As every year, the Conference aspires to cover a wide range of issues within the energy sector, thus helping to better understand the emerging challenges and opportunities. This year's Energy and Development Conference is taking place against a difficult geopolitical setting with brutal military conflicts in our vicinity (Ukraine, Israel – Palestine, Iran), thus raising a number of important issues in energy security and supply, which will be hotly debated at the Conference.

The presentation of the very important report published every year by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the World Energy Outlook 2024, is eagerly awaited. However, this year's conference will also deal with some relatively  new issues, mainly in the field of technology. Among them we will discuss the latest developments for Offshore Wind Farms, the Hydrogen Roadmap, the  introduction of biomethane, CO2 Capture, Storage and Management systems (CCUS), innovative photovoltaic systems, etc.

More than 75 distinguished experts, academics, high-ranking government officials and business executives, as well as journalists from Greece and abroad, have accepted IENE's invitation to participate in its annual event. Their contribution to the proceedings of the Conference is expected with great anticipation as it ensures excellent coverage of developments in the wide energy spectrum. These developments concern not only Greece and SE Europe but also the global energy agenda.

I must to warmly thank the group of sponsors and supporters, without whose valuable help we would not have managed to stage such a demanding event. Finally, I sincerely wish to all delegates, speakers and moderators a pleasant and fruitful Conference.

Costis Stambolis
Chairman and Executive Director, IENE
